Velocipede: a species of carriage

Velocipede: a species of carriage impelled by the rider. An account of the machine invented by M M Blanchard and Magurier, appeared in the Journal de Paris, July 27, 1799; exhibited to Louis XVI., 1808; a machine of like nature introduced by W Drais, at Mannheim, 1817; one patenteed, called the Accelerator, 1819. The use of Bicycles and Tricycles introduced into Paris, 1867, and from thence to America the same year; into England, 1868.
