A Flying Velocipede Hoax (1869)

A number of persons in Sunderland were, on Tuesday, made victims of an ingenious hoax. Some wag, a day or two ago, announced by handbills that a sight would be witnessed in Burn’s Field on Whit-Tuesday, when a gentleman would fly through the air on a newly-invented velocipede and alight on Tunstall Hill. A crowd of people collected and after patiently waiting for some time, it begun to dawn upon them that they had been wickedly hoaxed.
