An Extraordinary Bet (1819)

An extraordinary bet of fifty guineas has been decided by two gentlemen of St Columb, one of whom undertook to run a velociopede from that place to Liskeard, a distance of 26 miles, in four hours. – Notwithstanding the badness of the road, which caused the machine to move very heavily, he won his wager, by performing the journey 21 minutes within the time, with perfect ease.
