The Great Bicycle Meet (1879)

The Great Bicycle Meet

The entries for the ten miles handicap in connection with the above closed last night with the unprecedented number (in Ireland) of forty-four. This is a long way the best entry ever received for a cycle race in Dublin, where we have seldom seen more than half a dozen coloured for a race. The following clubs have intimated their intention of being present: – Irish champion, Dublin University, Phoenix, Eglington and Ixion (all Dublin clubs): Northern, Cork, Duncannon Ramblers, Tralee and Limerick (Provincial clubs like “unattached i” riders will have special care taken of their welfare and tricycles will have a place in the procession. Tickets for the dinner at the Gresham in the evening are to be had from the hon. Sec., who would be much obliged by those who intend to dine making early application, as it is very necessary to know how many are to be provided for. To the Editor of the Freeman

Sir – While wishing the coming bicycle meeting every success, will you allow me to suggest that a place may be allotted on Saturday to tricycles which have lately come so much into use and also that in the ten mile race a shorter course than that selected for the fifty mile race may be adopted and to enable the public to witness more of the contest than would be possible in the large circuit of the Phoenix Park. – Yours,

                                                                        Senex.
