Velocipede Race (1869)

 Velocipede Race – On Monday night (the 31st ult.) there was a large assemblage of persons on the Market Hill to witness a velocipede race between a four-wheeler (belonging to Mr Samuel Wright) and a bicycle, the property of Mr Jos Hills, postmaster. The course was about two miles out and back from Sepulchre Street to the Holgate Melford Road and the distance was run in 16 minutes by the bicycle, which kept the lead all the way and reached the winning post two minutes before its competitor.
